Mercedes explains aerodynamic balance issues with W17 upgrades

Mercedes has identified why its recent technical upgrades to the W17 have made the car more difficult to drive. While the new package successfully increased overall downforce, it caused an unexpected shift in the car's aerodynamic balance toward the front axle.

During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, the team utilized the reopening of parc ferme to experiment with different configurations for both drivers. This allowed engineers to gather data to understand why the package, originally introduced in Malaysia, has not performed as expected.

Simone Resta, Mercedes deputy technical director, explained that the increase in downforce was not consistent across all operating points on the track. This inconsistency has narrowed the car's optimal operating window and forced drivers to adapt to a less predictable vehicle. The team plans to analyze the collected data during the break before the upcoming race in Austin.
