Mercedes explains decision not to adopt active rear wing technology

Mercedes Deputy Technical Director Simone Resta has revealed that the team investigated the concept of an active, pivoting rear wing over a year ago but ultimately decided against implementing it.

While rivals such as Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren have adopted this technology—which allows the wing to change orientation to reduce drag—Mercedes concluded that the benefits did not justify the necessary investment in development and manufacturing. Resta noted that while the system provides a clear advantage in reducing drag, it also results in a significant loss of downforce when active.

Despite not using the system currently, Mercedes remains open to reconsidering the technology in the future as they continue to evaluate technical solutions implemented by other teams.
