Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff addresses development lag and engine changes

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged that the team is currently lagging in the Formula 1 development race. While Mercedes enjoyed a strong start to the season with six consecutive wins, the team has faced increasing pressure from rivals Ferrari and McLaren. Technical Director James Allison noted that early design decisions have impacted the car's performance evolution, causing the team's initial advantage to diminish.

Wolff stated that the team has a clear development plan for the remaining races and aims to regain competitiveness, specifically targeting a win at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.

Beyond immediate performance, Wolff is also engaging in discussions with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali regarding future engine regulations. Wolff expressed a desire to move away from current hybrid configurations, which he criticized for their sound. Discussions are reportedly underway to shift toward a power unit split of approximately 80 percent combustion and 20 percent electric power to improve the auditory experience and performance characteristics of the cars.
