Mercedes F1 cites budget constraints for slower car development

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff has stated that the team lacks the financial resources to match the rapid car development seen from rivals McLaren and Ferrari during the 2026 season. Wolff explained that the team is attempting to distribute its $215 million cost cap allowance evenly throughout the year to optimize championship points, rather than deploying large upgrade packages early.

This conservative approach has seen Mercedes' early-season dominance fade, with McLaren and Ferrari securing recent victories. Mercedes has focused on smaller, incremental updates, with a more significant aerodynamic package not expected until the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia this October. This delay leaves the team vulnerable in upcoming races in Italy, Spain, and Azerbaijan.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expressed skepticism regarding these claims, noting that Mercedes could potentially utilize cost cap flexibility to accelerate development. Meanwhile, Wolff noted an improved professional relationship with Red Bull's Laurent Mekies compared to previous years of friction with Christian Horner.
