Mercedes fire destroys former Rex cinema and theater

A large-scale fire destroyed the former Rex cinema and theater building in Mercedes, Soriano, early Wednesday morning. The blaze, which began shortly after 1:00 AM, affected a structure measuring approximately 20 by 50 meters, causing the collapse of the second and third floors as well as the roof.

Emergency services, including firefighters from Mercedes and Fray Bentos, responded to the scene. Due to the intensity of the smoke and the risk of the flames spreading, authorities evacuated between 30 and 45 people from the adjacent Hotel Brisas del Hum and nearby residences. No casualties have been reported.

The building, which dates back to the 1940s and is currently unused, had previously shown signs of forced entry and was occasionally used as a shelter by people experiencing homelessness. While the fire has been controlled, specialized personnel from Montevideo are expected to arrive to conduct investigations. Authorities have not ruled out arson as a possible cause.
