Mercedes gains edge after Hamilton’s exit as Ferrari faces budget‑cap limits

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff warned that Ferrari’s rapid pace of car updates could soon exceed the $215 million budget cap governing 2026 Formula 1 chassis teams. Wolff said, “We are always a bit surprised that Ferrari can implement such huge updates… they will soon run out of money under the cost cap.” The FIA’s update register shows Ferrari with 28 aerodynamic updates, second only to Red Bull’s 30, while Mercedes trails with 13.

Former driver David Coulthard echoed the sentiment, calling Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari “a blessing for the silver arrows.” He argued that Hamilton’s departure eases Mercedes’ driver‑line‑up challenges, allowing the team to focus on integrating young talent Kimi Antonelli and maintaining competitive development without the pressure of retaining the veteran champion.

Both comments highlight Mercedes’ strategic advantage in the current season: limited spending on updates under the cost cap and a refreshed driver roster, while Ferrari may struggle to sustain its aggressive development programme.
