Mercedes W17 upgrades fail to deliver performance in Sepang

Mercedes has faced unexpected performance struggles at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Sepang, despite introducing a major aerodynamic upgrade package to its W17 car. The team implemented seven key updates, including a redesigned floor, new sidepods with a downwash philosophy, and revised suspension components, aimed at increasing downforce and improving airflow to the rear.

However, the upgrades failed to translate into competitive lap times during qualifying. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, while George Russell struggled to eighth. Team Principal Toto Wolff noted that the car exhibited unusual behaviors, including excessive drag on straights and front-end instability in low-speed corners.

Drivers expressed confusion over the mismatch between positive wind tunnel data and actual track performance. Russell highlighted the challenging, abrasive nature of the Sepang tarmac as a potential factor. Because the team cannot revert to the previous specification, they must now focus on data analysis to extract performance from the new package for the race.
