Mercedes plans strategic upgrades for second half of 2026 F1 season

Team boss Toto Wolff said Mercedes will introduce more upgrades in the latter half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but will do so strategically rather than at every race. The new regulation era saw the team win the opening six Grand Prix events, then only two of the next five as rivals Ferrari and McLaren deployed more aggressive updates. Mercedes’ sole major upgrade so far came in Canada, with the focus since then on smaller, incremental improvements while staying within the $215 million cost cap.

Wolff warned that the team must time upgrades for maximum performance impact. He also noted that drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are approaching the season‑long engine‑usage limit; a fifth power unit would trigger a 10‑place grid penalty. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord acknowledged that penalties are likely and that the strategy team is working out the optimal path through the remaining races.
