Mercedes shifts focus to 2027 development amid championship lead

Mercedes has begun shifting technical resources toward the development of its 2027 car, leveraging a significant lead in the 2026 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship. Team principal Toto Wolff noted that the team’s 145-point advantage over Ferrari provides a “nice buffer,” allowing for a strategic focus on future regulations.

In the current season, Mercedes has secured ten wins out of fourteen races, with Kimi Antonelli accounting for eight victories and George Russell for two. Despite this dominance, Wolff remains cautious, stating that the team will continue to focus on every race until a championship win is mathematically certain, noting that crashes or retirements could quickly diminish their lead.

Regarding driver standings, Wolff indicated that George Russell’s chances for the 2026 title are no longer viable, as Antonelli has taken a commanding role within the team.
