Mercedes Sosa: The legendary Argentine singer and voice of social justice
Mercedes Sosa (1935–2009), the renowned Argentine singer known as ‘La Negra’, remains a global symbol of resistance and the voice of the voiceless. Born in Tucumán, she became a central figure in the ‘Nueva Canción’ movement, which blended traditional folk music with lyrics addressing social justice, independence, and dignity.
During Argentina’s military dictatorship, Sosa faced persecution, censorship, and exile. Despite these challenges, her music reached international audiences from Buenos Aires to Paris, representing the struggles of workers, the poor, and indigenous peoples. Her influence extended beyond music as a UNICEF ambassador, and her death in 2009 prompted three days of national mourning in Argentina.
