Mercedes to deploy new aerodynamic package for both cars in Austin
Mercedes is planning to equip both cars with its new aerodynamic package for the upcoming race in Austin. This follows an experimental approach in Singapore where the team split specifications, with Kimi Antonelli running the new car and George Russell using the older version.
Team principal Toto Wolff stated that the split specification was a necessary step to accelerate the team’s learning curve regarding the new car's unique setup philosophy. While Wolff noted that the upgrade has not yet reached its expected performance levels, he described the progress as a step in the right direction. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin added that data from the Singapore weekend showed the new package was clearly faster.
In Singapore, Antonelli faced scrutiny regarding track-limit infringements. Wolff joked about the driver needing to sit higher to better see the road to avoid such issues, but ultimately defended Antonelli’s performance, noting his maturity in managing a difficult car while pushing to the limit.
