Merck and Moderna cancer vaccine shows promise in melanoma trials

Merck & Co and Moderna have reported successful results from a Phase 3 clinical trial for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene. The treatment, designed for patients with high-risk melanoma, is administered in combination with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda following surgical removal of tumors.

In a trial involving over 1,000 patients with stage two, three, or four melanoma, the combination therapy significantly reduced the risk of the cancer returning or spreading to other organs compared to using Keytruda alone. The vaccine is customized for each individual by sequencing the patient's tumor to identify specific genetic mutations, instructing the immune system to target those unique cells.

While the results are considered a major milestone in personalized oncology, experts note that the findings still require peer review and regulatory approval before becoming widely available. Moderna and Merck are also expanding research, with trials currently underway or planned for non-small cell lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic, and stomach cancers.
