Moderna and Merck see significant market activity following mRNA cancer trial results

Moderna shares surged 177% in a single session following the announcement that its individualized mRNA cancer therapy, intismeran autogene, met primary and secondary endpoints in a Phase 3 trial. The INTerpath-001 trial involved 1,137 patients with surgically removed melanoma, marking the first time an mRNA-based cancer therapy has achieved positive results at this stage.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel described the development as “a pivotal moment for the field of cancer research,” noting the transition of personalized mRNA treatments from an aspirational concept to a reality. While the trial met its endpoints, analysts noted that specific risk-reduction statistics widely circulated online actually originated from a separate Phase 2b study rather than this Phase 3 announcement.

In related pharmaceutical market activity, KBC Group NV reduced its holdings in Merck & Co., Inc. by 7.1% during the second quarter, leaving the firm with 1,131,286 shares. Meanwhile, technical analysis of Merck shares suggests a potential breakout above recent resistance levels, though some models anticipate a corrective move before sustained upward momentum resumes.
