Mercosul license plates become mandatory in Brazil

The Mercosul vehicle identification standard is now mandatory across Brazil. This unified system aims to standardize vehicle registration among South American Mercosul member nations, introducing changes to visual design and character structure to assist public and private security monitoring.

Replacement of old license plates is not required for all vehicles simultaneously. The obligation is triggered by specific events, such as property transfers, changes in municipality, issuance of a duplicate, or annual licensing renewals. Drivers who do not undergo these specific administrative changes may continue using older plates. Costs for the new plates are not federally standardized; instead, each state determines its own pricing.
