Mercosur-EU agreement boosts Uruguayan pharmaceutical prospects

The Mercosur-European Union trade agreement is creating new opportunities for the Uruguayan pharmaceutical industry. During the seventh edition of Uruguay Best Practices in Pharma Supply Chain, experts discussed how the agreement expands Mercosur's global GDP coverage from approximately 8% to 20%.

Uruguay is positioned to act as a regional logistics hub due to existing trade flows. Currently, about 45% of pharmaceutical transits passing through Uruguay originate from the European Union. Of that volume, roughly 75% is redistributed to the broader region and 60% is destined for Mercosur countries.

To support this transition, Uruguay XXI has launched a dedicated portal providing information on tariffs, commercial requirements, and market analysis. Industry representatives noted an increase in investment dynamics and expressed interest in attracting more European companies to the sector.
