Mercosur-EU trade deal shifts competitive dynamics for South American producers

The trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur is shifting economic dynamics. While negotiations were previously hindered by European farmers' fears of South American agricultural competition, the implementation of the deal has reversed these concerns for producers in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

Since the agreement took effect in May, Mercosur producers are facing increased competition from European goods in their domestic markets. The deal creates a massive free trade zone covering approximately 780 million consumers. Sectors particularly vulnerable to this shift include producers of wine, cheese, honey, and chocolate.

Additionally, Mercosur producers must cease using European protected designations for products manufactured outside of Europe, such as the Italian cheese ‘Grana Padano’. Brazilian dairy officials suggest that high-quality cheese producers may face significant challenges regarding product differentiation and brand recognition.
