Argentina beef consumption falls 12% amid rising prices

Argentina is experiencing a significant decline in beef consumption, which fell by 12% during the first seven months of the year. According to CICCRA, apparent consumption reached 1.202 million tons, a decrease of 163,400 tons compared to the same period in 2025. Per capita consumption has dropped to 46.3 kilograms per year, approximately 4.8 kilograms less than a year ago.

This contraction is driven by rising prices, with beef cuts increasing by 52% year-on-year, significantly outpacing general inflation of 34%. As a result, many consumers are switching to cheaper proteins like pork. Additionally, a reduction in the cattle herd and lower slaughter rates—down 9.8% in the first seven months—have limited domestic supply.

Broadly, the Argentine retail sector is struggling. Indec data shows a decline in mass consumption, with supermarket, wholesale, and shopping center sales all seeing decreases. Regional reports highlight sharp drops in provinces like Tucumán and Entre Ríos.

In contrast, the Paraguayan livestock sector sees potential growth. Producer Martín Masi suggests that Paraguay can capitalize on sustained international demand and global cattle shortages by focusing on production efficiency and herd replenishment.
