Mercury pollution in Suriname reaches Paramaribo via fish consumption

Mercury pollution in Suriname is affecting residents in Paramaribo and surrounding coastal areas through fish consumption, according to environmental scientist Christiaan Max Huisden. While mercury use is traditionally associated with gold mining in the interior, research indicates that methylmercury is entering the food chain and reaching populations far from mining sites.

During an information session organized by a collective of environmental and nature organizations, Huisden, chairman of the Suriname Alliance for the Environment (SAFE), warned that mercury can damage the nervous system and harm fetal development.

In addition to mining, large-scale deforestation for agriculture is identified as a significant risk factor. Soil disturbance during deforestation can release stored mercury back into the environment, further exacerbating the contamination of water supplies and the food chain.
