Mercy Ships begins 10-month surgical mission in Ghana

Mercy Ships has launched a 10-month field service in Ghana aboard the Global Mercy, the world’s largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship. This mission marks the organization’s return to the country after 19 years and renews a partnership with the Government of Ghana that originated in 1991.

Stationed at the Port of Tema until June 2027, the ship aims to provide specialized surgical care and dental treatments free of charge. The organization expects to perform between 1,900 and 2,600 surgeries and provide 1,600 to 2,000 dental treatments during the service. Additionally, the program will focus on the training and mentorship of Ghanaian healthcare professionals.

The initiative addresses critical shortages in Ghana’s medical sector. According to the Ghana Health Service, the nation has approximately 200 physician-anesthesiologists and orthopedic surgeons, along with nearly 500 dental professionals. These shortages, combined with high costs and geographic barriers, often prevent patients from accessing necessary specialized care.
