Merendero de la Mari restaurant to close in Barcelona

The iconic Merendero de la Mari restaurant in Barcelona's Port Vell is closing its doors. The establishment, which has operated in the area since 1995 and has roots dating back to 1927, is facing eviction scheduled for October 2 due to unpaid rent.

Owner Rosa Maria Ribera stated that attempts to negotiate with the property owners were unsuccessful. The restaurant, which once employed sixty people and currently employs twenty-five, saw a decline in revenue following the pandemic. The site is currently being managed by Palau de Mar, which is in discussions with another operator to take over the space.
