Mereni Museum Highlights Centuries‑Old Legends and Cultural Heritage

The History and Ethnography Museum in the village of Mereni, Anenii Noi district, is one of the oldest museums in the Republic of Moldova. Housed in a former bank building constructed between 1909 and 1910 and inaugurated in 1911 by local benefactor Profirii Rejep, the museum preserves a range of artifacts from prehistoric fossils to traditional folk costumes. Director Larisa Ciobanu explains that the most popular legend for the village name is that it derives from “a beautiful orchard of Mere Domnești” where historic caravans rested. The museum will host the inaugural Festival of Film and Histories from 3‑6 July, featuring screenings and discussions about political repression. Notable items include dinosaur‑era bone fossils discovered in a nearby sand pit and a nationally‑awarded costume donated by artisan Lidia Bojescu.

The museum’s role in safeguarding local legends, documenting the settlement’s first documentary mention in 1475, and promoting cultural tourism underscores its significance for the community and for Moldova’s broader heritage preservation efforts.
