MERI Forum faces criticism over Kurdish political representation

The MERI Forum, held in Erbil on October 12-13, 2026, has faced significant criticism regarding its political inclusivity and representation of the Kurdish people.

The Office of President Barzani issued a statement distancing itself from the forum and criticizing its structure. The primary concern raised is that the event failed to include all major political factions, which critics argue deepens polarization and division among Kurds. Specifically, the forum was noted for lacking representation from East Kurdistan (Rojhilat) and various political circles, including the ENKS.

Observers pointed out that while the DEM Party was represented, many other political currents and intellectuals from across the Kurdish regions were excluded. The forum, organized by the Middle East Research Institute and sponsored by Rudaw, was criticized for its perceived one-sidedness in discussing regional integration and political processes.
