Meridian National Union opposes Local Police reorganization plan
The Meridian National Union has expressed strong opposition to a proposed government reform aimed at reorganizing the Local Police in Romania. The plan, part of the governing program proposed by Siegfried Mureșan, seeks to transfer public order and safety responsibilities from local authorities to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Under the proposal, administrative duties such as construction discipline, environmental protection, and commerce would remain with local authorities, but the employees performing these roles would no longer hold the specific status of police officers. The reform also envisions the Romanian Police becoming a single national law enforcement structure by incorporating the Border Police and operational components of immigration services.
The union argues that this centralization threatens community safety and violates the principles of decentralization and local autonomy. They contend that local police provide essential proximity to citizens in neighborhoods and public spaces, and that the reform appears to be a mere 'accounting operation' to reduce costs rather than a measure based on community needs.
