Merriam-Webster’s Time Traveler tool sees renewed online interest
Merriam-Webster’s online “Time Traveler” feature, first launched around 2018, is experiencing a fresh surge of attention from language enthusiasts. The tool lets users explore English words by the year of their first recorded printed use, starting from 1500, and view definitions for each entry.
Users can enter any year—such as their birth year—to see which vocabulary entered the language at that time, revealing surprising connections between personal history and linguistic development. The feature highlights that the displayed dates reflect the earliest known printed evidence, not necessarily the word’s first spoken use.
