British Columbia bans off-road vehicles in multiple fire centres

Authorities in British Columbia have implemented several restrictions to mitigate wildfire risks caused by hot, dry weather. The B.C. government and the BC Wildfire Service have issued prohibitions on the recreational use of off-road vehicles—including ATVs, motorcycles, and side-by-sides—on Crown land across multiple fire centres, including the Kamloops, Southeast, Cariboo, and Coastal regions.

In the Coastal Fire Centre, the ban is scheduled to remain in effect until noon on October 9, 2026, unless rescinded earlier. Exceptions to the off-road vehicle prohibition include the North Island/Mid Coast, Mid Island, and Sunshine Coast, as well as use on private lands, national parks, and for emergency, agricultural, or commercial purposes. Violators may face fines of up to $1,150 and could be held liable for firefighting costs if their actions contribute to a wildfire.

Additionally, the City of Merritt has ordered the immediate closure of all forested areas along its municipality's periphery, including trails above the Bench, Lookout Road, and Collettville, effective until September 15, 2026. In Kamloops, officials have urged extreme caution and vigilance, noting that wildfire risk is exceptionally high.
