Merseyside heatwave crowds overwhelm beaches, spark police disturbances and rail disruptions

Record-breaking May temperatures across the UK saw highs of 33 °C in Liverpool and forecasts up to 35 °C. Thousands flocked to Merseyside’s Formby and Ainsdale beaches, filling car parks to capacity and prompting Sefton Council to close access and advise drivers to seek alternative routes.

Merseyside Police reported multiple disturbances at train stations, on the beaches and on the roads as crowds returned home. Officers diverted traffic and urged the public to be patient and respectful.

Merseyrail’s Chester line suffered cancellations and service alterations because of the surge in passengers, with the operator confirming disruptions on the Bank Holiday Monday. The combined pressure on transport, road networks and local services led to widespread travel chaos throughout the region.
