Mersin authorities penalize 280 taxis during citywide inspections

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality's Traffic Police Department has conducted extensive inspections of commercial taxis across the city. As of August 2026, authorities have inspected 810 vehicles, resulting in penalties for 280 taxis found to have deficiencies or violations.

The inspections cover a wide range of regulatory compliance, including operating licenses, visas, permits, and taximeter functionality. Officers also monitor vehicle air conditioning usage, smoking or phone use while driving, and traffic violations such as running red lights.

Common complaints addressed during these operations include drivers refusing short-distance passengers and setting prices without using taximeters. The municipality stated that these measures aim to ensure safe, high-quality transportation for citizens while protecting legitimate taxi drivers from unfair competition and illegal unlicensed transport.
