Mersin Memory Office digitizes local newspaper archives

The Mersin Memory Office, operating under the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, has launched a major project to digitize local press archives to preserve the region's recent history. A primary focus of this initiative is the digitization of the Tarsus Yeni Ses newspaper, covering its publications from 1969 to 2011.

By scanning approximately half a century of newspaper issues in high resolution, the project aims to protect historical news, advertisements, announcements, and photographs from physical deterioration and loss. This digital archive will serve as a resource for academics, researchers, and citizens interested in the social, cultural, and economic evolution of Mersin and Tarsus.

Beyond newspapers, the office is also digitizing maps, photographs, ephemera, and old documents. Additionally, the project includes oral history efforts, where interviews with individuals who witnessed the region's development are being professionally recorded, transcribed, and intended for future publication as books or documentaries.
