Mersin emerges as a key destination for Russian residents and buyers in Turkey

Mersin is emerging as a significant destination for Russian citizens in Turkey, competing with established hubs like Antalya. The increase in the Russian population in Mersin is partly driven by the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, which has brought many workers and their families to the Silifke and Gülnar regions.

Data from August 2026 indicates that Mersin remains a top destination for foreign real estate buyers, ranking third in Turkey behind Istanbul and Antalya. In August 2026, Mersin recorded 143 housing sales to foreigners. While Alanya continues to hold a strong position for Russian buyers, Mersin is becoming a notable competitor in the regional property market.

Tourism and accessibility are also contributing factors. The opening of the Çukurova International Airport has improved transportation to the region. Mersin offers various attractions, including the historical Kızkalesi, Cennet and Cehennem sinkholes, and Kanlıdivane Ancient City, which local tourism operators are looking to leverage as interest from foreign nationals grows.
