Mersin International Port chemical leak affects 35 people

An industrial accident occurred at Mersin International Port on September 4, 2026, when a construction machine overturned onto a container, causing a chemical leak.

The leaked substance was identified as ethyl acrylate, a chemical classified as moderately toxic and commonly used in products such as paint. The leak resulted in an intense odor throughout the area.

As a precautionary measure, 35 individuals affected by the odor were transported to hospitals. The Mersin Governor's Office reported that all 35 people are in good health and remain under medical supervision. AFAD CBRN teams conducted measurements and reported that no negative environmental values were detected. Port operations were temporarily suspended, and the container was moved to a secure isolation pool.
