Mersin Municipality Expands Agricultural Support and Neighborhood Kitchen Aid

Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi distributed extensive agricultural assistance in Gülnar, providing 145 producers with 271,440 tomato seedlings, 221 producers with 11,050 kg of powdered sulfur, 150 kg of local bean seed, over 5 km of irrigation pipe, four 300‑litre milk‑cooling tanks and specialised processing machines. Officials said the measures aim to lower input costs, boost rural production and sustain small‑scale farming.

The same municipality’s “Mahalle Mutfakları” (Neighbourhood Kitchens) programme now operates at 59 locations across the city, having served more than 7 million meals since its 2020 launch. The kitchens offer three‑course, protein‑rich meals at a symbolic price, targeting low‑income residents, students and the elderly, and are coordinated through the Social Services Directorate.

Together, these initiatives illustrate Mersin’s broader push to strengthen agricultural livelihoods and provide affordable nutrition to vulnerable citizens.
