Turkish municipalities face widespread corruption investigations

Multiple corruption and fraud investigations are unfolding across several Turkish municipalities and institutions. In Mersin, a large-scale probe into the Mersin Metropolitan, Yenişehir, and Mezitli municipalities has led to the detention of 59 suspects, including Mayor Vahap Seçer, Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit, and Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer. Investigators allege significant public losses, with claims of over 1 billion TL in Mezitli and 105 million TL in Yenişehir. A search of a suspect's residence uncovered substantial assets, including 257,600 euros, 25,120 dollars, 64,100 pounds, and 4 kilograms of gold bullion.

In Bursa, Mayor Mustafa Bozbey and former Nilüfer Mayor Turgay Erdem are facing legal proceedings involving charges of forming a criminal organization, bribery, and zoning pollution. Bozbey has been removed from office and faces potential prison sentences of up to 402 years.

Other notable investigations include a corruption probe at the Yalova Courthouse involving procurement irregularities between 2023 and 2026, resulting in the arrest of two staff members. Additionally, Diriliş Spor Yapı İnşaat Limited Şirket is under investigation for allegedly defrauding investors through agricultural and rural development grants across multiple provinces.
