Mersin police hand out record fines for traffic offenses
In Mezitli district of Mersin, police responded to a viral video showing a van driver and a motorcyclist exiting their vehicles to fight. The two were identified, detained and fined a total of 362,719 TL under traffic law violations, had their driver licences confiscated for 60 days, and their vehicles were banned from traffic for the same period. A criminal investigation was also opened.
Separately, authorities fined a driver who performed drifting maneuvers on a public road in the same district. The driver received a 140,000 TL fine, a 60‑day licence suspension, and faces criminal proceedings for endangering traffic safety. Both actions were prompted by social‑media reports and illustrate intensified traffic‑safety enforcement in the region.
