Mersin Sea Turtles Nest Amid Conservation Efforts

On a beach near Erdemli in Turkey's Mersin province, a group of young locals discovered a nesting Caretta caretta sea turtle. They encircled the nest with reeds, warned authorities and later helped the turtle return safely to the sea.

The nesting season, which began later than usual due to climate factors, is continuing along the 321‑kilometre Mediterranean coastline. Researchers from Mersin University reported that, despite the delayed start, the number of nests remains encouraging and the regional sea‑turtle population appears to be growing. Dr. Mahmut Ergene noted that turtles that hatched three decades ago are now returning to the same beaches to lay eggs, reflecting long‑term success of protection measures.

Officials reminded the public to keep at least 25 metres away from nesting turtles and to avoid flashing lights, as disturbance can cause turtles to abandon the site or lay eggs in the sea.
