Mersin University saves 27 million lira via solar energy

Mersin University (MEÜ) has achieved significant cost savings through the implementation of solar energy plants on campus. Under the Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings (KABEV) project, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and funded by the World Bank, the university has converted idle areas such as parking lots for the university hospital and the faculties of medicine and architecture into clean energy production centers.

According to Rector Prof. Dr. Erol Yaşar, the solar energy plants produced over 1.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity between January and July of this year, resulting in 8.5 million lira in savings. Since the plants were first commissioned, total production has exceeded 4.5 million kilowatt-hours, yielding an economic gain of more than 27 million lira. The university continues to invest in these technologies to reach its goal of becoming a self-sufficient, eco-friendly campus in line with net-zero emission targets.
