Turkey municipalities implement new disaster risk and urban safety measures

Various Turkish municipalities and regional authorities are implementing new digital systems and strategic plans to enhance disaster preparedness and urban safety.

Mersin is currently updating its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan for the 2027-2031 period. Coordinated by AFAD, the initiative involves analyzing earthquake performance of critical buildings, assessing structural risks for urban transformation, and evaluating infrastructure like bridges and culverts to mitigate flood and forest fire risks.

In Elazığ, the municipality has launched a Risk-Prone Buildings Information System. This tool uses Geographic Information Systems to map vulnerable structures, allowing for better disaster analysis and emergency response planning. This follows the implementation of a Fire Information System designed to coordinate emergency teams and track vehicle locations.

In Adapazarı, local leaders are calling for urban transformation to be a top priority, emphasizing the need for a clear roadmap to identify risky structures before earthquakes occur. They stress that transformation must include financial models that protect citizens from heavy debt. Meanwhile, in Rize, authorities are inspecting culverts and drainage points following recent floods to prevent future water flow obstructions.
