Mersin wildlife conservation: Sea turtles and sand lilies protected
In Mersin, Turkey, approximately 100,000 green sea turtle hatchlings have successfully reached the Mediterranean Sea. Experts from the Mersin University Sea Turtles Application and Research Center monitored the nesting process across five key areas, including the Davultepe coast, where 138 nests were identified. While the number of nests in the Davultepe area decreased compared to last year, researchers noted this is a natural fluctuation in nesting cycles rather than a population decline.
Simultaneously, efforts are underway to protect the rare sand lilies blooming along the coasts of Erdemli, Silifke, and Anamur. These protected plants are vital to the local ecosystem. To prevent damage to these lilies, authorities have issued warnings, noting that individuals found harming them could face fines ranging from approximately 669,000 TL to over 3.4 million TL.
