Mersin announces Zero Waste Target Document and environmental roadmap
At the Mersin Workshop Results Conference, Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced the Mersin Provincial Zero Waste Target Document, establishing a roadmap for the city’s environmental future. Göktaş emphasized that zero waste is not merely an environmental policy but a “family policy,” noting that sustainable habits are first formed within the home. She also highlighted the goal of reaching 1 million women through the “Waste-Free Sustainable Life Project” and mentioned that 9,500 ministry personnel have completed training on zero waste practices.
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality was recognized for three exemplary zero waste initiatives: activities at the Mercan 100. Yıl Climate and Environment Science Center, the “Joining Forces for Plastic-Free Mersin Coasts” project, and a compost production project using organic waste. The conference, organized by the Zero Waste Foundation and held at Mersin University, aimed to increase urban resilience against climate change and promote resource efficiency across local and national levels.
