Meru County police investigate unidentified man found near elephant corridor

Police in Buuri West, Meru County, have launched an investigation after the body of an unidentified man was discovered in a trench near an elephant corridor in Subuiga on September 11, 2026.

The deceased, estimated to be approximately 50 years old, was found shirtless and wearing orange trousers with no shoes. No identification documents were found on the body, and there were no visible injuries. Preliminary investigations suggest the man was not known in the Subuiga area. The body has been moved to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

Authorities believe the man may have been killed in an encounter with an elephant. This incident occurs amid rising human-wildlife conflicts in the region. To address these issues, Kenya has implemented the Human–Wildlife Conflict Compensation Programme and introduced the Wildlife Conservation Card to fund conservation and mitigation efforts.
