Merwestein sports complex reopens in Nieuwegein after renovation

The Merwestein sports and event complex in Nieuwegein has reopened following a 2.5-year renovation, expansion, and sustainability project. The reopening is being conducted in phases, starting August 31, with swimming lessons, sports clubs, and meeting rooms available immediately, followed by the recreational pool section on September 3.

The transformation includes a complete renovation of the recreation, activity, and wave pools, featuring enhanced facilities for toddlers and interactive elements. The complex now includes a double sports hall, eight meeting and movement rooms, and four catering points named ‘Drinks & Bites’. The total gross floor area is approximately 19,000 square meters.

Sustainability was a primary focus of the redevelopment. The site now features over 2,700 solar panels, rainwater harvesting and reuse systems, and energy exchange capabilities with the adjacent DeMIX building. The operator, Verbindion, aims to position the facility as a multifunctional hub for sports, leisure, and events, utilizing data and AI to enhance the visitor experience.
