Merz Academy declared insolvent in Germany

The Merz Academy, a century-old institution for art, design, media, and technology in Stuttgart, Germany, has filed for insolvency. The Stuttgart District Court approved the application on Tuesday with a provisional self-administration order.

The insolvency is attributed to a failing financial model, declining student enrollment, and the expiration of key cooperation agreements. Economic challenges, including rising operational costs and the impact of the pandemic, have also contributed to the institution's instability.

Despite the filing, classes are expected to continue. The academy is operated by the non-profit Merz Education Center, and while the academy itself is affected, the Merz School, Merz Vocational College, and the Merz Education Center are legally independent and expected to remain operational. Managing director Andrea Zweifel stated that the provisional self-administration provides an opportunity to restructure financially and secure the academy's future. Discussions regarding restructuring are expected to involve the state of Baden-Württemberg, various universities, foundations, and corporate partners.
