President Donald Trump has announced plans for Mesabi Metallics to construct a massive steel-manufacturing complex in Iowa, described as the largest steel plant in United States history. The project involves an investment ranging from $15 billion to $18 billion and is expected to begin production in 2030.

The facility will be fully vertically integrated within the U.S., utilizing iron ore from a new $2.5 billion mine in Nashwauk, Minnesota, operated by Mesabi Metallics. This Minnesota mining operation is noted as the first new iron ore mine to open in the U.S. in approximately 50 years.

Economically, the project is projected to create approximately 6,000 construction jobs and between 1,750 and 2,000 permanent positions. The plant aims for an initial annual production capacity of 7.5 million tons of steel, with plans to eventually reach 10 million tons per year. Trump linked the initiative to his administration's 50 percent tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum, framing the project as a cornerstone of efforts to reshore manufacturing and bolster national security.
