Mesoamerica targets 30% land and sea conservation by 2030

Mesoamerican nations are working to accelerate efforts to meet the ‘30x30’ goal, which aims to conserve at least 30% of the region's land, inland waters, and marine zones by 2030. This objective aligns with Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in 2022.

The Regional Mesoamerica Forum towards 30x30, held in Mérida, Mexico, brings together environmental authorities, indigenous peoples, scientists, and civil organizations to address the challenges of effective conservation. Key priorities include ensuring connectivity between ecosystems, establishing equitable governance, and securing sustainable financing.

Conservation efforts must extend beyond traditional parks to include ‘Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures’ (OECMs) and territories managed by local and indigenous communities. A significant challenge remains transboundary conservation, as many ecosystems and biological corridors, such as the Great Maya Forest Biocultural Corridor involving Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, span multiple national borders.
