Messolonghi Hospital anesthesiologist found dead while on duty
Anesthesiologist Errikos Tsiakouris, 48, was found dead at Messolonghi Hospital on Saturday morning while on duty. He was discovered by a colleague who arrived to relieve him of his 24-hour shift. Tsiakouris, who had served at the hospital for approximately three years, was a married father of an 8-year-old child and reportedly had no known underlying health issues.
Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDHN), noted that the hospital's anesthesiology department was critically understaffed, with only two specialists serving the facility. While the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy, the incident has prompted discussions regarding occupational burnout and the severe staffing shortages within the Greek National Health System (ESY).
