Messenia reservoir project faces funding delays

Funding remains unconfirmed for the construction of the Trikorfou–Polylofos reservoir in Messenia, a project intended to combat water scarcity and support local agriculture. While studies for the project have been budgeted at approximately €169,865, the total construction cost is estimated at €7.1 million.

The project, which includes a 59,000 cubic meter capacity reservoir, a pumping station, and an irrigation network, has been under evaluation for 16 months. The proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, but a final decision on funding has not yet been reached.

Local officials, including Messenia Mayor Giorgos Athanasopoulos and regional opposition leader Manolis Makaris, have called for increased pressure from members of parliament and the regional authority to expedite the process and move from the study phase to actual construction.
