In the ongoing Montoro case, María Lobo, the legal representative for the gas company Messer Ibérica, testified before a judge in Tarragona. She is the only representative from an indicted company to testify so far.

Lobo stated that the firm Equipo Económico, founded by former minister Cristóbal Montoro, provided a “roadmap” for the company to follow. She defended the payments made to the firm, asserting that the services rendered constituted real and valuable legal advice regarding tax regulations that the company believed were detrimental to the sector.

Lobo denied that Messer Ibérica paid for political favors. She noted that the company engaged both Equipo Económico and Ernst & Young to address legislative modifications concerning the special electricity tax in an effort to eliminate unfair treatment of gas companies.
