Messina administration faces financial oversight and transport debates
The Sicilian Region has appointed a commissioner, Angelo Sajeva, to oversee the Municipality of Messina following the failure to approve the 2025 financial management report within legal deadlines. The commissioner will hold a three-month mandate to verify financial documents, solicit auditor opinions, and bring the report to the City Council, potentially replacing non-compliant bodies if necessary. The costs of this commissioner procedure will be borne by the municipality.
In a separate local development, the public transport company Atm has rejected a proposal by the Scurria group and opposition parties to offer one month of free bus travel to mitigate rising fuel costs. Atm cited potential financial instability, noting that free travel would cause an immediate imbalance due to decreased revenue and increased operating costs, estimated at 450,000 to 500,000 euros in lost ticket sales.
Meanwhile, in Sciacca, the Europa Verde political group has called for the resignation of Mayor Fabio Termine. The demand stems from the controversy surrounding municipal assignments granted to the association Terre di Dedalo. While no legal violations were cited, the group argues the situation raises concerns regarding public ethics, impartiality, and the perception of political privilege.
