Messina advances urban accessibility and infrastructure projects

The city of Messina is pursuing several urban development and accessibility initiatives. The municipality has submitted an application for the European Commission’s ‘Access City Award’, aiming to position itself as a strategic Mediterranean hub for accessibility. The proposal focuses on four key areas: accessible infrastructure, sustainable mobility, information and communication, and public services. Proposed measures include the implementation of the ‘Messina accessible and inclusive city’ program to remove architectural barriers, the introduction of ten electric buses with low floors and wheelchair ramps, and the creation of tactile paths for the visually impaired.

In a separate infrastructure development, the Messina municipality has initiated a project to improve road access and urban amenities in Ortoliuzzo. After nearly 30 years of delays, a technical working group has been established to manage the widening of access roads, the extension of seaside paths, and the construction of parking and pedestrian walkways. This project aims to resolve long-standing traffic congestion and safety issues in the village, where narrow roads currently hinder vehicle passage and emergency services.
