Messina and Reggio Calabria mayors advance Strait integrated area

The mayors of Messina and Reggio Calabria, Federico Basile and Francesco Cannizzaro, are strengthening their collaboration to develop the “Oltre lo Stretto” (Beyond the Strait) integrated area. The initiative focuses on improving infrastructure, maritime connections, and transport services between the two cities.

A key priority is establishing a direct bus link between Messina and the Tito Minniti Airport in Reggio Calabria. Managed with ATM, this service is planned to begin in December, departing from the Cavallotti parking area to provide an alternative to the Catania airport.

Additionally, the mayors aim to restore the pier at the Coast Guard station to enhance hydrofoil services. To formalize these efforts, a joint meeting of the two municipal governments will be held this week to draft a political proposal for the national government, requesting formal recognition of the Strait Integrated Area.
