Italy urban planning: Brindisi, Messina, and Montalto Carpasio projects

Various Italian municipalities are navigating urban planning and regeneration initiatives. In Brindisi, ANCE Brindisi has welcomed the municipality's restart of the process for a new General Urban Plan (PUG). The organization emphasized that planning must go beyond mere technical norms to include sustainability, social housing, and climate change mitigation, urging the city to involve businesses in realizing a long-term vision.

In Montalto Carpasio, two new spaces were inaugurated following a €275,000 urban regeneration project funded largely by the Liguria Region. The project includes social housing and a community social hub. The regional government has funded 212 such interventions in Liguria since 2021.

In Messina, the Special Commissioner for the redevelopment of shanty towns, led by Sicilian President Renato Schifani, has responded to the municipality's “Rigenera Messina” masterplan. While acknowledging the initiative, the Commissioner noted that under specific national laws, the Special Commissioner holds the authority to acquire proposals and manage investments for housing relocation and environmental remediation, pending the availability of necessary resources.
